Easter Sunday at Milano's

I’ve spent the last two Easters at Mars Bar. Well, sadly that’s not going to happen this year. So some of us have decided to meet at what’s probably the next best place to celebrate Easter Sunday at, St. Patrick’s Cathedral. JUST KIDDING! Some of us have decided to have our annual Easter drinks at Milano’s Bar on Houston St., not far from the former Mars Bar location. So let’s hop on over there.

it's a nice day, but a little bright out for my tastes.

Well here's a sad sight, the corner where Mars Bar used to be.

Here's the same corner last Easter. What a difference a year makes!

Hmmm...I wonder who put this up here? Rumor has it that it was Uncle Waltie. Sip Ahoy!

And here we are at Milano's Bar.

Love all the neon signage in the front window.

As I walk in I see some familiar Easter faces from last year.

Goggla, Eric and Hamlet have come to enjoy the Easter festivities at Milano's. Good to see all of them.

And bartender Lisa has her bunny ears on and quickly hopped over with a bottle of Budweiser.

And I'm not the only one snapping photos in here. Down at the other end of the bar some Canadians are taking photos of Lisa as well.

A fan spins overhead and of course a classic dive bar like Milano's has tin ceiling.

Here's a shot of the well-worn wooden bar from the other end of the room.

Lisa topped off Eric's Guinness with a design of an Easter Bunny from the backside. Too funny!

And it's only fitting that Jesus looks down on us and proclaims...

"Come forth and drink my children." And so drinketh, we shall! Thank you, Jesus!

Frankie not only went to Hollywood, he hangs out in Milano's as well.

The walls in here are plastered with photos of patrons from the past, some of them plastered.

These Polaroids made me think of the Impossible Project Space.

I love some of the old newspaper clippings hanging on the wall in here.

Everyone's going Ape!

Check out the classic cash register behind the bar! Very cool!

Finally night time has fallen on Milano's bar.

We broke out some Peeps that I got at Economy Candy before Easter dinner arrived.

And here's Easter dinner, pizza from Lil Frankie's.

A delicious Easter dinner that we shared with the whole bar.

And Lisa offered up a parting shot and it was time to call it a night. Hope you all had a Happy Easter Sunday!

Great post. I'm sure Jesus would've joined you as soon as he popped out of that damn tomb. By the way, here's a fun thing to do with leftover peeps - microwave them! Quite gruesome. Happy Belated Easter!

Guess you could say the Easter Bunny hopped a bit crooked yesterday. Nah, that wasn't it, someone moved the damn Easter Trail is all.

April 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterDaveW

did they put jesus up especially for easter? lol! looks like a great easter dinner and i love the parting shot of you and lisa! and i need to try that microwaving of the peeps that katrink suggested! lol!!

April 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBobby D.

@Katrink: Ha ha ha! I'll definitely try nuking some Peeps next year for sure!

@DaveW: Yeah, the old Easter Trail has been moved. It was fun yesterday, but it sure made me miss the Mars Bar!

@Booby D: Jesus hangs out there all year round! And that pizza was great, it was Eric's idea and a great one at that!

I keep waiting for 'Peeps' to come out with a little pink marshmallow Jesus for Easter. Ghod, I wish Lil Frankie's pizza could deliver out here to Blaine Minnesota, that pizza looks wonderful! And after I finished eating that pizza, I'd mount and frame the boxtop, it's a classic!

Thanks for making another Easter memorable. Here's to spring - cheers!

Wow, how'd you take so many pix in there? The last time I was in I got my tail chewed off for snapping a couple of shots of the bar. Must be your superior people skills.

@Jaws: I've never had a Lil Frankie's pizza but I will have more in the future! It was a great Easter dinner and a fun night out with friends!

@Goggla: Great to see you and everyone else, thanks for stopping by and for the Easter egg! Rocky Racoon is on my coffee table! Cheers!

@Ned Sparks: Who chewed you out? Maybe you got a bartender who was having a bad night, or maybe it was just a little bit of that Easter magic in the air!

Marty, That's a great bar, I've been in there a couple of times. Is that a naked boy on the Lil Frankies pizza box?

Your last photo is a pretty accurate representation of the first Easter.
After being dead for three days, a resurrected Jesus would smell awful.
The only way to mask the smell would be to hold a small glass of spirits under the nose.
Occasionally imbibing said spirit would help counteract the freakishness factor somewhat.
All in all, people would huddle together in abject terror. (Symbolized by interlocked arms)
Keeping as ear out for ghoulish Jesus (symbolized by the rabbit ears)
Either keeping an eye out to know where Jesus was (symbolized by Marty's wide peeps)
or holding one's eyes shut tight hoping Jesus would go away. (Symbolized by Lisa's closed tight peeps.)
Or something like that.

I was there one Saturday night wearing my leather Mafia jacket with my friend who also had on a long leather overcoat looking like two Mafia hit men. We silenced the bar but soon they started talking again. I though it was funny but weird at the same time, still in those years Mafia hit men were everywhere in Little Italy though I could never have made it as one. At least I tried haha!

@Professor Dungpie: Happy Easter to you, good to see you commenting again! Sorry to hear about the health issues with your Mom and Dad, but glad to hear things are better! Looking forward to your coming out here, we'll have thousands of beers!

@Danny the Freelancer: Milano's is a classic NYC dive bar, been there forever! And yes, that is a naked boy on the pizza box, perhaps it's Lil Frankie himself!

@csp: Ha ha ha! Good translation of that photo!

@Mykola Mick Dementiuk: That's a funny story! It's hard to silence people in Milano's but you did it!

Marty; found a little something just for csp. Check your e-mail!

The "Parting Shot" just may be the cutest image ever :)

I simply must go shopping for Time To Drink McJesus immediately!

April 9, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterroadsidewonders

Well, its too bad about Mars, the before and after pictures of that corner are alarming. Some crazy nut is trying to put a huge building next to Milano's and,,,,get this,,,he want the building to jet out over Milano's building without ever touching it,,,sounds crazy but its true. Milano's is on my top five all time bars in New York.

And I think I saw Jimmy Breslin in one of those pics at Milano's. He used to hang out at Costello's, now known as Overlook, over on E 44 st.

If Biff hasn't been here .... it's gotta be #5,298,377 on her list now !

April 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterGENE

@Jaws: I'll check it soon!

@roadsidewonders: Glad you liked the "parting shot!" Lisa's a great bartender and certainly added to the Easter festivities of the evening!

@Al: That sounds nuts about the building next to Milano's, I'll ask about that the next time I'm in there. I'm sure Jimmy Breslin has downed some drinks in this joint.

@GENE: Ha ha ha! I don't think Biff has ever been to Milano's, we'll see if she shows up in the comments later.

Jesus wearing Mardi Gras beads = HILARIOUS.

@ GENE: HA HA HA! I was just going to tell Marty that he's really gone and done it now - I'm going to have to wipe 4000 entries off my list to spend an entire fucking day at Milano's!

April 9, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBiff

@onemorefoldedsunset: Great to see you as well and yes, that was a cool shade that Goggla had on!

@meleah: I know, it cracked me up too!

@Biff: Don't cross them out yet, Mega-Millions is tomorrow!

Milano's is one of the few reasons I'd voluntarily cross Houston Street. Wish I had known you were there. Would have been a great place to spend Easter.

I did get it, just double checked. Unfortunately, there were 5 days of debauchery between April 3rd and April 8th. My Bad!
