And We're Off!
It's a little cloudy out here, but still bright for me. I'm used to maneuvering at night. I need to get some sunglasses!
Okay, we're in the East Village and we're almost there!
I thought it only fitting to start this whole adventure at a familiar spot, McSorley's Ale House! The oldest bar in New York City, a real iconic spot.
They were here before you were born!
Wow, this is a sight I've never seen, the bar is empty! This is the right time to be here!
It's still too early to be serving in here, but here's the moring crew having coffee and shooting the shit. That's Pepe the bartender on the right in the white shirt. He told me these guys have never spent a nickel in here.
Pepe is stoking the fire and still setting stuff up. I decided to get out of the way and wait till they start serving beer.
Gumby and I settled in to this corner table. I'll be back in a bit with beer! See you in about an hour!

I'm jealous .... that is awesome .... probably not a better time to be there ...... you don't have to deal with the loud & obnoxious jacklegs who usually go there because it's a cool spot & on some tour guide thing ........
Loving the new site. It was well worth the wait, my firend.
As a kid I used to go to school and church right across the street from McSorley's, St George's Ukrainian School and church. Boy did my innate ignorance always suffer from the those who should've known better. The hell with them. Order yourself two glasses of light and dark and just sit back; enjoy life.
@GENE: It's so great in here in the daytime!
@JAZ: Thank you my friend, I appreciate it!
@Mykola Mick Dementiuk: Soon I'll drink a toast to you and your advice you just gave me!
Yo, Marty...I've only had the vaugest idea of what you did for a living and I sent you my impression of it. Check your E-mail!
@Jaws: Thanks, I'll check it in a bit, connection is a little slow here on the road.
I started in the bar/restaurant business at McSorley's back in the late '80s - say hello to Pepe and Ritchie (the waiter)... GREAT place - seriously... When they say they don't know a "Scooby" - tell 'em it's the guy who had the 442 and smile for me. And many thanks for your site - it is brilliant!!!
And Scooby, I just did and Pepe says hi! Glad you like the blog!
Cool Blog!
I love the smell of Mcsorley's in the morning: it smells like good times!
I’m a native New Yorker currently living Miami; one of the many things I miss about New York is McSorley's Ale House. Give their cheese platter a try.
Also I’m very impressed by the comments, no flaming, no nastiness; just nice people.
@Martin: I just had the cheese platter! It'll be up in about a half an hour! And yes, the commenters here are the best, I truly appreciate them and hope you join the crowd!
Splendid choice! Wish I was there. I do love a near empty bar.
@Marty
Are they still serving the hot mustard with the cheese?
My McSorley’s “ritual” was to start things off with the Liverwurst sandwich, for a good base…..18 beers later I’d order the cheese platter.
Started going there in 1963, when I was 16 and underage. Did you know they didn’t allow woman until ’69 or ’70; a lot of the regulars were outraged.
@Jason: Thanks! I thought it would be a good place to start the action!
@Martin: As you've seen, the mustard is still served and it is still hot! Yeah, I knew about the no woman rule, I'm glad they changed it!
You know that McSorley's is now located in a Historic District???
Ah! There's nothing like the smell of fresh sawdust in the morning!
@Katrink: I had no idea! When did that happen?
@Biff: It smells like viictory!
Yes, early is the only time to go. Haven't been there for so long - nice to read about yr. visit. Wish I had a little stove like that ...
@onemorefoldedsunset: I forgot how nice it is in their early on a weekday!
